Why Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety provides critical skills to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This course is specifically tailored for public safety personnel, enhancing your ability to provide initial support and connect individuals to appropriate care. Learn from real-life stories like that of Captain Joseph Coffey, who credits his training in helping save lives during crises.
Statistics to Note:
- Almost 10% of police calls in 2014 involved someone with a mental illness (NPR).
- 1 in 4 police officers has considered suicide at some point (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
- Annually, 1.2 million individuals with mental illness are jailed (Mental Health America).
Course Highlights:
- Implement the ALGEE action plan: Assess risks, Listen nonjudgmentally, Give reassurance, Encourage professional help, and Encourage self-help.
- Defusing crises, promoting mental health literacy, combating stigma, enabling early intervention, and connecting people to care.
Who Should Attend:
This training is designed for all ranks and positions within the law enforcement and first responder community, including:
- Law enforcement officers
- Corrections officers
- Other first responders
- 911 dispatch staff
