Course Description:

Join us for an in-depth Instructor Development event presented by the Penn State University Justice and Safety Institute. This 5-day program is meticulously structured to enhance the instructional capabilities of participants, empowering them with advanced techniques for teaching within law enforcement and safety environments.


Course Modules Overview:

  • Day 1 – Build a Foundation:
    Introduction to basic adult learning theories.

  • Day 2 – Learning Principles & Course Preparation:
    Strategies to enhance learner retention and effective course design.

  • Day 3 – Training Approaches:
    Exploration of various teaching methodologies tailored for adult learners in law enforcement.

  • Day 4 – Assessing, Testing, and Evaluating & Communication:
    Techniques for evaluating learning outcomes and effective communication strategies for trainers.

  • Day 5 – Presentations:
    Participants will create and deliver presentations utilizing concepts learned throughout the week.


Course Objectives:

  • Master the application of SMART objectives in developing learning activities.

  • Synthesize and apply effective communication strategies for varied training scenarios.

  • Implement classroom management techniques and evaluate training effectiveness using Kirkpatrick’s four levels.

  • Develop comprehensive presentations that integrate all course concepts.

Manager for the Criminal Justice Professional Training Unit at Penn State Justice and Safety Institute

Charles brings extensive experience in law enforcement training and education. With a background as a Major at the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and Executive Director at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions, he offers a wealth of knowledge in both practical law enforcement operations and academic instruction.
