City of St. Albans Dedicates New 24/7 Pet Microchip Scanning Station

The City of St. Albans is proud to announce the dedication of the new Pet Microchip Scanning Station located at the St. Albans Police Station at 613 MacCorkle Avenue, St. Albans, on Thursday, March 13 from 3:00-5:00. The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Society will provide a microchip installation clinic from 3-4pm and the dedication will follow from 4-5pm.

The scanning station is available 24/7 to enable good Samaritans who may find a lost pet to assist in reuniting that pet with their family. It is provided by the cooperative efforts of the Kanawha Obedience Training Club and the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Society and dedicated by the City of St. Albans and St. Albans Chief of Police, Marc Gilbert, to the Memory of Sgt. James Butler and K-9 partner, Deuce, who were members of the St. Albans Police Department.

“This Microchip Scanning Station is the first of it’s kind in the Kanawha County area” say’s Debbie Keener, member of the Kanawha Obedience Training Club who initiated the project. “We wanted to partner with the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Society to provide the public with the opportunity to help bring lost dogs home to their people and keep them out of the shelters. One of the goals of St. Albans Humane Officer Jeff Moore and the KCHS staff is to help return pets to their homes as quickly as possible. By making this scanning station available, they are enlisting the community’s help in doing so”.

The scanning station allows anyone finding a lost pet to scan that pet for a microchip. If a chip number is found, the individual may access the microchip registry online and follow the instructions to obtain the pet owner’s contact information, facilitating the return of the pet.

Dog microchipping will be available from 3-4pm for $25 per pet. The process only takes a few minutes and increases the chances of recovering a lost pet.

The public is invited to bring their pets on Thursday, March 13 and learn more about the importance of microchipping. Pet Supplies Plus and the Gateway Animal Hospital, both of St. Albans, will be on hand along with staff from the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Society and members of the Kanawha Obedience Training Club. There will be special gifts and goodies for the dogs! Kanawha-Charleston Humane Society will also have puppies available for adoption.
